International Conference

“Innovation Pedagogy for Indonesian Higher Education”

Introduction

According to the Global Innovation Index 2017, Indonesia is ranked 87 out of 127 countries observed. Among the ten ASEAN countries, Indonesia sits at the 7th after the Philippines. Meanwhile, in term of population, Indonesia is the 4th largest country with around 260 million people, which could provide a huge potential capacity to create innovations.  It is also one of the Indonesian government’s strategic plans to induce innovations. There are many factors that can positively influence the innovation skills of people, one of which is basically the people’s innovation mindset.

We propose to organize an international conference to introduce teaching and learning pedagogies that promote innovation mindset. We believe that the innovation mindset can be nurtured through education. This conference will provide a big picture on how Universities - from Rectorate until lecturers - can help develop and shape their students’ innovation mindset through European Union (EU) tested Innovation Pedagogy methods, which have been piloted in five higher education institutions in Indonesia through the INDOPED* project, i.e. Bina Nusantara University (BINUS) in Jakarta, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah in Jakarta, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) in Yogyakarta, Universitas Negeri Syiah Kuala (UNSYIAH) in Banda Aceh, and Universitas Katolik Widya Mandala (UWM) in Surabaya.

The European Commission co-funded INDOPED project started in October 2015, and up to date, altogether 9 learning methods and 1 assessment method have been piloted in five Indonesian higher education that involve thousands of students and over hundred lecturers (teachers). The origins of the piloted INDOPED methods are Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) from Finland, Inholland University of Applied Sciences (INHOLLAND) from the Netherlands, Business Academy Aarhus (EAAA) from Denmark, University of Gdansk (UG) from Poland and University of Seville (US) from Spain.

Organization of Conference

The conference will take place in Yogyakarta on 6th of March 2018 hosted by the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (MORTHE) and Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta UNY. The target participants include the management and lecturers of higher education institutions.
